It was hard to say that any day working in the ER was average, but all ER doctors knew, the longer you did it, the more desensitized you got. You saw horrific things on a daily basis, and more often than you would like, you watched people die, despite your best efforts to save them. Regular doctors, and even specialists to a degree, didn't have to deal with the emotional strain and toll of watching patients die on the operating table. But those doctors that did have to watch such things developed a thick skin quickly, and tended to develop a sort of emotional numbness, just to cope. Some turned to drinking, some developed intense hobbies, and some threw themselves into family life, just to have some piece of normality. But most, like Dr. Anthony Knight, simply detached from the world entirely.

But sometimes life didn't allow itself to be disconnected, and determined people tried to break through the walls that Dr. Knight put around himself. His mother was a prime example, and on any given day he could expect anywhere from one to ten calls from his lonely, and still attractive mother. He indulged her behavior, largely because he had no choice, but he also held a certain amount of respect for her. Despite the odds against her, she had raised him on her own, and was resourceful enough to ensure that her son was able to get into medical school. That had always been her dream; that her son would be successful and handsome, and the sort of person that she could brag to her friends about. And despite his lack of finances, Anthony made it through medical school through sheer determination, and rose to the top of his classes, securing scholarships and prestigious internships along the way. He was the charity case that everyone wanted to see succeed, and he wasn't too proud to turn away the help.

But his mother wasn't the only single mother who had vied for his attention in the past; there had been a patient, a young woman, who refused to take no for an answer. She was pregnant, yet was not beyond flirting with her young and disinterested doctor. She was not the first patient to try and flirt with him, but she was certainly one of the most determined. Time had an odd way of passing here, so Anthony wasn't entirely sure how long it had been since Norah--she had insisted he call her by her first name--had been in the hospital.

During his rounds, he was informed that there was a visitor asking for him; assuming it was only his mother, he took his time, taking care of all the little things he could before drudging to the lobby. He scanned the crowd, looking for his mother's face, literally stopping short when he saw a very different face casually flipping through the lobby magazines.
